Home made mini 4 Wheeler, all from lawn mower parts.
« on: October 31, 2006, 11:29:11 pm »

My 3 year old boy loves his powerwheel 4 wheeler, I might be jump'en the gun a little here, but soon he'll be ready for somthing a little more powerfull. Right now being electric it keeps up with my grass cutter on full speed and he can drive better then me. The plastic wheels dont allow it to go up much of a hill, and it does'nt have enough power to go through any kind of thick grass/brush. Sooo over the winter I'm gonna build a frame for the parts I have collected and use the 4 wheeler body on it. So far I have a sweet OHC 6.5 Honda motor thats very light, a peerless transaxle (small single speed F-N-R), a front axle from a small rear engine JD and some cool little knobby tires for the back, and the hard to find 6" rim's with 3/4" keyway. For a clutch I'll run a cyntrifical and run a mini bike hand throttle.
All I had as a kid was a little go-kart with a tired 5hp flat head one wheel drive that was a slick. Went quick, but had no low end power or traction for any off road fun, but really enjoyed it anyways.
Oh, all most forgot, I'm gonna mount the transaxle upside down to keep the motor low for a safe center of gravity.

I stole the idea from george#22

He has 12hp with a 3sp.

Well we have discussed splitting the build thread off in the backroom to allow other interesting builds and it sounds like it's a go, so... when we get to it we'll move your thread there!

How's that sound?!

You are there dude... Other Interesting Builds!  :rocknana:

Now you are officially required to build this project posting pictures throughout, with technical details, and step by step description of all hair pulling and headaches encountered in the course thereof!!

"Your gonna do what to his powerwheels?"...She's used to me and my projects, she just nod's her head. But I know when it's done I'm gonna catch her on it. I allready had to tell her to get off of it the way it is now. But with a real metal chassis it will beable to handle an adult, if you dont mind your knee's up to your face.

This thread makes me chuckle.

It makes me chuckle becuase I have a spare 8HP engine that I was measuring up to my girlfriend's son's 4 wheeler power wheels before I got caught starting to modify it and told that I was not to touch it.

There are people there running them at 18, 24 and even 36 volts. I guess they can get up to 14mph or faster. But I still like the gas engine idea, and rubber wheels is a plus

I need your guy's opinons on two thing's:

Should I build the frame so the front axle articulates?
That way it can keep both back wheels on the ground while going over rough terrain. Or should I make a solid front axle that's attached directly to the frame so it stay's leval in corners. I will keep the diff open, and I'm aiming for a top speed of 10mph.

Would facing the motor backwards be ok? Originally on the mower the motor faces with the spark plug up front, but I want to postion the motor so the muffler points out the rear side wheel opening instead of the riders leg. Is there any oiling problems that will come about when going up hills, accelerating or pulling a wheelie? The oil will flow twards the cylender instead of the back of the block.

Keep in mind I need to keep it as light as possible, so it needs to stay simple.

Given 10 mph top speed I wouldn't think acceleration to be such to move oil back into the cylinder causing any problems. You aren't turning high Rs so forcing oil past the rings is not a big issue, and you're not really worried about the minor little bit of drag on the cylinder that would be created if it did at that speed. As far as oiling on hills, wheelies and such being an issue, not everyone's yard is flat and level and if the mower bogs down in heavy grass one of the first things you do is lift the deck off the ground. Pretty much the same as doing a wheelie!

Shouldn't see any problems with front end at these speeds either.

I'm sure sitting over the rear axle has somthing to do with the front wanting to point to the sky.
I'm hoping with the 4 wheeler layout, and handle bar up front, the rider's weight will be more centered, in stead of most of it being over the back wheels.

exsactly, or when you make a turn with a push mower you push down on the handle bar's to lift the front end off the ground to spin it. But I'll be facing the engine the other way. So instead of the oil moving to the back of the block it will move to the cylender/back of piston.
Where is the oil pick up on these motors?
