Question on Super Mod offset
« on: October 15, 2010, 09:21:19 am »
So a couple of us are going to build some supermods for fun and to go and race with the Canadians at times. Do you have to build with the offset or can we build it centered. The reason I am asking is that we also want to run exhibitions at the US tracks that have the right hand turns.

I don't see in the ARMA rules where you have to offset them. It just gives the measurement for the offset.

If your just going to be an exhibition at the us tracks, why not build with offset?

Ryan can chime in on this but i think you can build offset into the chassis and still be able to run on a track with a bend in it.  Also, you don't need to go with 4 inches of offset.   2 inches is good enough.

So, the main question from me, is it mandatory or not? Can I have it 42 inches wide with both sides at 22 inches from the center? Or do I have to stay 19 inches on the left?

The offset is not mandatory, the max overall offset is 4" meaning the axle itself can be offset a max of 2". Some outlaw machines don't run the full overall 4", some have non. As PitGuy mentioned, they are still pretty capable of a slight right hand turn with offset no problem.

Ok ryan, so how about a whole other subject? You say some guys don't run the full 4 inches? Why not? What kind of benefits does this add. Other than the obvious stability, what do you gain with offset? And how does it feel driving off set versus on center line? Thanks

The reason I am asking is for the track in Sparta has a 90 degree right hand turn. I think it would be hard to do with offset.

You can take the corners harder without the chassis wanting to roll over as easy with more offset when conditions are right, but you can also have too much offset causing other problems, its a balance.
The other problems are not actually caused from too much offset, its too much left side weight. Usually in extreme cases if your machine wants to go into a sideways four wheel drift out high in the corners like my chassis did (due to too much left side weight) its better to move the right rear wheel in slightly until that problem goes away. An inch is a mile when doing this, I only have 1/2" offset in the rear of my currant machine to make it corner better, last years machine I couldn't get enough offset in it to make it work. Its one of those things that will have to be figured out as you go, every chassis is different. Just make your chassis so there is some adjustment to move things around. I have also found that with the right rear moved in slightly, it gives you more control under power exiting the corner.
I would go the full offset with the front axle.

The reason we don't use right hand turns is not because these chassis's won't do it, they will turn right quite well, even with the full offset, its just that we are going way too fast and having a right hand turn just increases the chances of an accident.

The safest class we have is our Outlaw class with zero incidents this season, it also happens to be our fastest, highest hp class.

At the Kart track this past weekend, one of our junior karts wanted to spin out coming out of the turns.  Turns out his right rear tire was in too much and once his father moved it out 1 inch ( inline with the front tire ) it made the kart more stable.

Also people think that offset is the greatest thing out there, but our sportsmen winning kart was a non-offset.  He just had over a year of testing and tuning on the chassis to make it turn the way he wanted it to.     I know that you guys don't run karts but some of the thinking does overflow into the mowers.   Karts don't have suspensions also

karts set-ups apply alot more to a mower than alot of people think. there isnt much difference in a kart than a mower when you really brake it down. i have ran karts for 5 years now and run a straight up kart and my kart and mower handle about the same. If you think about it the only thing different from a mower and a kart is the motor the trannie and that you sit up over the rear tires. I mean adjustable frront end kart axle adjustable cassets i mean theres not that much difference.
