1 or 2 master cylinders
« on: October 10, 2010, 04:34:25 pm »
Thinking about running front brakes next year, and was wondering what the advantages are to running 1 or 2 master cylinders. Is 1 suffecient, or do I need 2?

I think 2 would be better, if one would go south you would still have brakes, but i have seen alot of mini-sprints that run 3 calipers with one master,(1 rear and 2 fronts), i have considered running a small car master cylinder on new mower, cheaper than running the mcp's and hold alot more fluid!

I used a wilwood 3/4 bore master cylinder built for sprint cars.. A little tricky to mount compared to the mcp's but waaaaay more power.. And there seems to be a little more pedal than with the mcp's... Can lock em whenever I need to but I have enuf play to just slo em down without locking if need be.. Using a wilwood fr6 snow mobile caliper with it... Dot 3 fluid works fine in them as opposed to the more expensive dot 5 that the mcp uses..

i use 2 master cylinders on one mower with a balance bar and i use 1 master cylinder on the other with a splitter. I personaly prefer the 2 master cylinders because you can control how much pressure you put to each end

I ran one master cylinder on my CP last year with front brakes. This year I went to two MCP and I am not pleased at all thinking about wither going back to just one or trying out a different set of master cylinders.

Here you can see an aluminum plate. I used this as a back plate for the master cylinders to give them support so it doesnt flex the side panel. Also where the front brake lines go thru the side panel I used a rubber grommet to keep them safe.

Here are the master cylinders mounted and the all lines attached.

Here is my mechaincal brake bias. Very simple setup and I am going to make it adjustable on the fly from the dash. That will come later. It adjust from front to back.

I have the ec brake setup and the mechanical bias controller. Although I set mine up a little differently, it is towards the front of my chassis, actually out in front of my brake pedal so it pushes on the master cylinders. Haven't quite gotten it perfected yet. Although I did learn its tought to figure out but I still have a large hiccup in the system, I don't think my dual outlet rear master with one outlet plugged is right. It feels like that master is rock solid pushed about half way down, the fronts can be pushed all the way in and the pedal is decently firm. So advice at this point, if your going to push on the masters and have a single inlet caliper, use a single outlet master!!! Lol
