K-Series valve polishing
« on: October 27, 2006, 10:39:45 pm »
In polishing a Stens replacement valve using the technique as demonstrated in Don's video, a line showed up on the stem.  My guess is it's where the head is attached to the stem.  I had to use the Stens for monetary reasons, but even in my practicing on the old stock Kohler valve, there is a faint line there as well.

I only polished it to the stock diameter, just taking the roughness off.

My question is, has the strength of the valve stem been undermined?  Are these valves different than the Briggs valves shown in Don's video?

I'd sure hate to put this together only to have the head break off and do some serious damage to what will essentially be a brand new engine when I'm done.

Dale, wondering in Michigan

Couple ways to post pics now...discussed in this thread... http://www.heymow.com/index.php/topic,1671.0.html

Sounds like just a weld joint line, where they attached head to stem, but pics will help determine if it's a crack, weld, heat treat, or a disaster waiting to happen...

Well if anyone welds a head on they nuts, I have yet to see a valve that isn'st machined from one piece of material except for these new super light nascar valves thet are filled with some kinda compsite material it would take 7 or 8 of them to weight the same as 1 flat head intake valve.

Quite honestly looks like a joint where metal and composite are grafted together seen this on them nascar and high dollar race motors. I don't think ya got anything to worry about. We have an old Bill Elliot engine at our shop and Carrol (boss) has a valve out on his desk and it looks very similar to that. He used to race stock cars and how he got that motor is a LONG story so don't even ask.

Thanks George, that's been the general consensus, it's a joint of some sort.  I could  have misspoken about a weld.  I'll admit, I've asked around on several boards.

Now if I had only polished just a tad higher up on the stem with the final polishing.  I'll have to go back and take off that touch of roughness from the first, coarser, grit.
