Chassis/Frame "RULES" questions
« on: October 24, 2006, 09:06:25 pm »
I'm now at a standstill until parts get delivered and a few following questions get answered.

Entire mower is stripped down to a bare frame. Frame was “GUNKED” and scrubbed nice and clean. Chassis is a little flimsy on the lower half of the frame.
Can I run  1x1 square down each lower side of the frame  and a cross brace to stiffen it up? I see the rules state you can discretely stiffen up the frame…can someone define in the eyes of USLMRA what DISCRETLEY means?

Naked Frame!

As you can see, from about midpoint back there is no support whatsoever!

Can a motor plate be installed on the underside of frame? It will require grinding off factory stiffening lip.

Can the extra overhanging steel be removed from the original front axle mount?

That's it for now!

If i can see it..it's not discrete..

If I can not see it that's discrete...

If I "think" I can see it but it's really hard to tell...that's discrete too..

It could but probably not needed... Once you stregnthen the frame rails to minimize twist, the block adds a bit of stiffness and you should be good...You can cut the lip if you choose (George does to gain pulley room..)

Yes, that's a legal cut...as they measure from "FRAME" not axle or bracket or mount...same as cutting off a trailer ball mount or front attachment mount...

So would this come under discreet strengthening George? What i run here in the UK, some build pics so you get an idea... Its a John Deere 90, needed to make frame wider to stop the flex in the axle...

Here's a pic once its all hidden  ;)

The frame itself would fall under the guise of discreet reinforcement, however the USLMRA requires that wheelbase be unaltered, and the rear end is to use the original chassis as the mounting point Deano. Where you have eliminated the back half of the box frame, you'd have an issue under USLMRA rules.

Cool, that is actually the original width. Were limited to running a 25mm axle due to gearboxes we all use. I actually kept the original material that the axle was mounted to, just its now mounted on the wider box section!

We can make them a bit wider here, width is limited dependent upon class however. In the Prepared classes I believe all are set at a maximum of 38 inches wide. Unaltered wheelbase in reference there, is measured from center of front axle to center of rear axle at the hub. The distance should remain the same as originally designed. Essentially you can't shorten or lengthen the frame.

Likewise, we have to use a lawn tractor seat. No high backed cart style seat like you guys are allowed there.

And, we are required to run a factory deck in all but the Factory Experimental class. We are allowed to piece the deck and mount what are commonly referred to as "deck halves" to the running boards. Most also cut the deck down to a height of 1 1/2 - 2 inches to allow for clearance, since there are mandated clearances for both deck and frame.

Likewise, in the FX class you are required to fabricate something that resembles a deck in design of your running boards. Your machine with the fabricated chassis and running boards/deck would very likely fall within the rules for FX class, dependent upon engine size. There we're limited to a 465CC engine.
