project bobber with vangaurd v twin
« on: August 04, 2010, 11:22:59 pm »
for the last couple of months i have been searching and searching the internet for a bike to buy
but no matter what i look at nothing just seems to be right so i have decided that if i want it my way i am going to have to build it myself.
when searching around for different motor options i found some great looking old triumph motors and yamaha xs650's but they have all been built time and time again and im not into he norm.
one bike that really caught my eye was the ridley, a bike first built for women who couldnt work a clutch. these bikes have the equivalent of a lawn mower v-twin with a torque convertor set-up.

i recently came across a vangaurd 18hp horizontal v-twin (for free, cant beat it!) and was thinking about using it as the start of my bobber build. The whole build is going to be custom and i plan on sticking to true bobber form and only spending $800-1000.

my question is what kind of things do i need to do to this motor to make it hold up and stay together
any tips or cheap tricks and info on parts to buy would be greatly appreciated

ARC rods. Upgrade valve retainers. Roller rockers.

What are you going to use for a tranny?

ive seen one built with a 44 c magnum comet and it would run 70mph at 3600rpm

Not a bike if you don't shift.  Put a harley 6 speed on it. That's cool!

It wouldn't take shifting.  That heavy of vehicle and on pavement, it will explode!

yeah i plan on either using the torque convertor or a snowmobile type 3 speed transmission

so if i bought a set of billet rods, stronger push rods, retainers, and roller rockers i should be ok?

on top of an aftermarket carb and air-cleaner of course

how many rpm's can i run safely with a combination like this?

Polaris has the stand alone tranny with a vari-drive pulley. gives you forward and reverse . just have to get the belt and pulleys that go with it. 1 gear in each direction and holds for a 600lb atv plus rider.
