Rebuild problem
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:12:16 pm »
I took an old Tecumseh motor apart and put new rings in it. I got it all back together tried to start it and have air coming out the intake? The mower won't start. I'm a newbie to this stuff.

Yep, that might be it, take the little box off just behind the carburetor, inside you will see a set of springs and a "Lifter". there needs to be around .010 of clearence between the bottom where the spring mounts and the top of the lifter when the cam is is at the low side. If you have never done this it's kinda hard to explain. Why not go to the internet, there are some good tutorials there.

Are you talking about the breather valve box or the ohv box?

Valve lash is a measurement of the space between the moving parts of a valve train. Usually measured at the tappet to valve stem area on a flat head or at the rocker arm to valve stem in an OHV. But can be measured in other places if need be.
Do yourself a favor and
1. Go to the library and find a book on engine repair specific to your engine. (or)
2. Search the internet for the same book and order/download a copy.
The book will be valuable for other information too, like torque specs and such. Certain things in building an engine are very critical and must be set correctly. Without knowing how to and what to, you will simply be 'lucky' to have your engine work or even hold together. Spending money to rebuild a rebuild because a specification wasn't right is just frustrating and it gets expensive.

All I did was pull the bottom pan off of the engine to access the governor wheel. I never touched any valves, never messed with any setting or anything. So would me just pulling the bottom pan off have anything to do with those getting messed up?

Here are pics of what i did...

Did you put a gasket back in, when reassembling?

I took an old Tecumseh motor apart and put new rings in it. I got it all back together tried to start it and have air coming out the intake? The mower won't start. I'm a newbie to this stuff.

and then you wrote;

Now I'm confused. If your first statement is correct and you took the engine apart to replace the rings, then maybe you have put it back together incorrectly. If all you did was take the pan off to get to the governor, then maybe the cam jumped a few teeth when you pried the pan off and you didn't realize it. Maybe your crankshft endplay is too tight. Maybe this, maybe that. We can't help if your side of the story changes.
