10hp Briggs Flat Head Question
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:38:11 pm »
Any one know where I could get performance parts for my 10hp flat head engine. Like to find out also what parts may interchange from larger engines. I know some carbs will interchange from larger flat singles but other than that what. Thanks Josh

Too small to run with the big guys and too big to run with the little guys...

Not much (nothing) for parts...

Boat anchor.

Depends on the size of your boat! The opposed flatties are heavier, so they work better in a bigger boat!

You see thats the problem its my time and my money. So i can do what i please with it. My understanding when joining this forum was to get help ask question get answers and help others when you can aswell. If i wanted to get on here and let people bash what im doing with out even asking why im doing it or what im looking to achieve then id ask for that. All I did was ask a simple question and i was wanting a straight forward answer, not some one looking to put me down to feel better about them selves or what theyre doing. Besides an engine isnt the only part of the equation there is other things involved. chassis design, overall weight, handling, gearing, tires, bearings, brakes ect. you get the point, You can have all the engine you want or whatever and thats not gonna win races on a crappy designed chassis. So i would appreciate it if you would not chime in unless your gonna give me answers to my questions, no matter how dumb they may seem to you i didnt ask you how dumb it is. Thanks Josh

You are right.  There is more to a racing mower than the engine.  So get your chassis built and then focus on the engine, heck by then you may come across a 12hp to build.  Chassis takes a LONG time to get right, I've built 7!

As far as your question on the 10 hp (25 cid) I assume has no over the counter performance parts avalible at this time.  So if you want to build it you will have to make your own parts or find someone willing to build them for you.

mr. smitty if you read what they said you will find your asking... no one makes parts for this motor!!! that why there telling you to look for a diffrent motor... an all the guys that gave you a answer are no dumb guys... they been doing this awhile, also with a post like this you may never get help again..

you need to understand one thing, these guys race live it, eat it, dream it.... an that what they build to an your motor dont fit in any class so good luck with getting answers on here again...

theres a old saying.... dont slap a donky to get somewhere, it mite just set down on ya!!!

Sorry you took it as bashing, as Stroker said, the guys that answered you are always helpful, none of us meant to bash or put down what you are doing. Actually this particular group of guys are some of the most helpful and knowledgeable on flathead engines. I don't imagine there is much Hitch has not tried with a flathead!
What help would we be if we told someone it was OK to build an engine that most racers ultimately will find is a waste of time and money for what we do, which is for the most part sanctioned class racing.
If you are something different, you are welcome to do that, if you've read much of my stuff, you'd see that I am one of the biggest proponents of it.

I can see there is some frustration in your post from not getting the answers you wanted. SO let me give you what help I can.

Sometimes there are parts that will cross between engines, so lets see if we can find any.
What is the bore and stroke of your engine?
What is the rod length?

According to this chart, http://www.heymow.com/index.php?topic=12843.0 all dimensions fromm 220000 to 280000 model engines are the same. Same crank sizes, same bore. Stroke must be the biggest difference in these models.

Unless someone is a mind reader, they cannot tell you very much without knowing what motor you have. Briggs horsepower ratings are not enough. You need to know the model number. That will tell everyone which motor you have, before you can get any good advice.

And, mr smitty_78, one more thing.... racing mowers is fun!!! Lots and lots of fun! That's what it's all about. Everybody teases everybody else, at least once in a while, so lighten up and enjoy yourself! That's why this sport is so successful!

IF its a 10 hp 25 cube motor all the performance 12hp parts will fit no problem,,,, IF it is a 22 cube 10 hp then I stongly suggest you find another engine. as it simply won't have enough even built to keep up with the bigger motors.
