Boring out a vanguard
« on: April 05, 2010, 09:51:52 am »
I have searched and not found the answer for this so I am going to ask you all. I have a Vanguard 20 hp 35 cid and was wondering if it can be bored out to 38 cid? Looks like only 0.140. Is there enough meat to do it?

How big can you go on the stock sleeves of a 35ci?  I've heard .080?  who makes the pistons?

I've run many 35 blocks bored to a standard 75.5mm (or standard 38ci size pistons) without sleeving them. Never had a problem. That is as big as you can go without re-sleeving.
I have seen some blocks where the factory cast in sleeve was not exactly centered and the bore was offset slightly, you might want to stay away from those.
Al has forged 38ci pistons at Performance V-Twins.

So you're saying pop the heads off and if the sleeve is center bored from the factory, go ahead and bore it .140 and run the 38 cid pistons and rods?. I have a line on some used performance parts from a 38 that I might buy.

Are the pistons Al has for a std length rod, or do we have a long rod option for this 18 overbore idea. I suppose this would give a good compression boost with the 18 heads.

Like I said, I haven't had any trouble at all with the 35ci block bored out to 38ci.
Al's forged Arias pistons for the 38ci engines are for the long rods.

So I'm assuming that the intek 40ci flat tops would work when bored as well?  Standard or long rods?

The intek piston uses a stock length rod, and the larger wrist pin of the 35.

Ryan, you said long rods on Al's pistons, does that mean ARC rods or Al's, and what pin size are the Arias.

You can use what ever rod you want, Al's pistons & rods come with 17mm arias pins or the stock 35ci briggs pin diameter if you want.
Don't bore the block any bigger then the standard 38ci bore 75.5mm
