Peerless 600 Transaxle Questions...
« on: September 29, 2006, 02:10:44 am »
When lowering a mowchine and using a transaxle, what exactly are the specifications on attaching it to the chassis??

The rules state:

Front and rear axles must use original frame as primary mounting point.

I assume when mounting a transaxle the sides of the frame may be notched in the original position to allow lowering the mowchine, and angle iron mounts bolted through the sides of the original frame to attach it??

I know we have a thread on brake modifications using an 800 or 900 Peerless around here, but there the axle is exposed outside the frame. The 600 Peerless doesn't afford that option however, the axle tubes extend well beyond the frame. What are the guys that are running these doing for improved braking? Any pictures and ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Rocky, good question... I also was also wondering this.

I think it's time to summons the LAWN MONKEY

I know Al Minaker has an SP he built for his brother that is nice and low and has a peerless 600 with upgraded brakes.
Al can you please shed some light on this for us all :?:

Thanks buddy,

the monkey is here !!!

the way i did mine is , first like Rocky said i cut the body for clearance and dropped the frame to 5 inched  ( the pulley on mine would hit and hamper belt change if i went to 4 inches ) . Just so you know i put the transaxel on top of the frame , the frame on the one i built was setup for a chain drive from factory , I added tube to extend the frame to the back and drilled holes for the fasteners . I used a set of muffler clamps and welded the U bracket to the top transaxel tubes and replaced the Ubolts with grade 8 bolts , in doing so it sets the transaxel up level when the bolts are tightened .
as far as the brake goes i took a hub from a differant mower and welded a rotor on it , in doing so i took the axel and hub and had them cut for a keyway drilled the hub and put a setscrew in it .
after that i mounted it on the left side of the MOWchine under the fender .
i had to make a braket for the caliper but that has to be done anyhow .
I forgot to mention that i took a long axel out of a spare transaxel and replaced the short one to widen it to 38 inches , there are to differant length axels in a 600 peerless .
the only thing that can be a probablem is when you weld the rotor to the hub you have to make sure it stayes straight , if not you'll get some rubbing of the brakes and we all know how bad that is .

Thanks Allen... any chance you could get me a picture of the brake set up for clarification.

The lowering of things I understood. Looking at mine... I'm thinking maybe short axle, the hunt may be on again!  :?

I knew if we would summons him he would answer

Thank you Al, it has been awhile since I had taken a look at that mowchine of Adams and I couldn't remember how you did that.

Hmmmmmmm..... I take it that means there are 2 different lengths in each Peerless 600 Transaxle and you're running 2 long ones. OK!! I understand now. Thought you meant they came like in two different lengths. The hunt is definitely back on then, I need to find another one!

i have a couple axels that i could give you if needed .
just send me an email or repost it here if you need one or maybe two if i have as many as i think i do .
the only other thing i have to say about the 600 is make sure you do a good job of welding the gears together and make sure there very clean when you do .

Actually I was thinking the extra set of spiders dropped in there as the Canadian members have suggested elsewhere here in the forum, if I can find another set. Locks them up without having to weld anything.

If not I'll definitely be looking at all options in the making it a solid rear end department. Have pictures of a locking block to replace the spider gear assembly altogether that may work too. And, I have the mad machinist at G-Team to fall back on should they have to be welded, and I'm sure he'll know how to make it stick!  I think we can make it work!

If I can't find another 600 for the axle I'll shout Allen, thanks for the offer!! You wouldn't by chance have an extra set of spider gears laying around from one you exploded would you??

Ill look in the morning , i sure i do but cant promise any thing .

Your right about Don being able to make it work , i guess i was forgetting that he was in your back yard .

I had at one time thought about haveing one line bored and putting a 1 inch axel all the way threw with a ring gear setup on it . but then i went to the FX and havent looked back to much !! LOL

take it easy and ill let you know tomorro some time if i have a set of spiders .

not to burst ur bubble dude but the extra spiders lock that setup up because theyre wedged in there i u do it the way ur thinkin itll just act as a extra set of spidergears mainly cause the 600 have a crown gear that looks amost exactly to the 800 and they dont work that well eihter the only way i have seen it dont is key the crown gear and soild axel or weld em up good
