Stock connecting rod part numbers and physical differences
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:37:28 pm »
Model 28 OHV;
B&S P/N 494504 is an older part number, you can still find them for sale if you look hard enough for around $20.00
B&S P/N 494504(S) is the part called for that supersedes the above rod. They can found for around 30 bucks.
B&S P/N 692419 is the newest P/N and sells for around 70 dollars. (all average prices, not just the least expensive)

The physical difference that I can demise is at the crank journal end, the older 494504 has bolts that are the same size (3/8" maybe?)and the other two P/N's have two different sized bolts (3/8" and 1/2"). Please enlighten me if my research is skewed.

My questions;

Are there any other physical differences that would make the 70 dollar rod better than the 30 dollar one? Are the castings different? If so how? I couldn't find any "real" pictures of them online to figure it out on my own.

The one with the different bolts is a beefier rod.

The 494504S and the 692419 both have two differing sized bolts. Are they the same casting? Only the older 494504 has two bolts the same size.

Looks like one may be the larger pin size. One application for the 692419 is for 313700 motors.

Pin size is the same. all three rods fit the small journal crank, use the same part number for the wirst pin, fit 25 through 31 cube motors, etc etc.....

Let me rephrase the question.

Why does connecting rod #692419 cost more than the part number 494504S?

Looks beefier, and looks to be a bigger crank pin.
If this is absolutely the same size crank pin, the higher price one is beefier.

What motor do these rods fit? When I looked up # 494504S at outdoor dist. it says it does not come with a dipper, so I would assume it is for a horizontal shaft motor?

Looking up model 28N707 on outdoor dist. is where I got the part numbers. I saw that dipper notation too while doing other research on the difference, and I think that the same rod is used in the horizontals. They just use a different cap end.

I know that the 494504 old version is from pre '95. The 494504-S is an updated rod from 95 to 98 and the 692419 is the newest one listed for that motor. I know that as engineering corrections are made parts get superseded. But it APPEARS that the 494504-S and the 692419 are the same piece, just two differing prices. Just trying to clarify that and if that is the case, why would I buy a 70$ rod when I can get the same thing for 30 bucks?

Things happen in the big world we live in, things that may not be readily explained. Such as giving a part a new number and setting a new price point for it. Heck if I thought I was always getting the deal of a lifetime every time I bought something, people would call me crazy. Well maybe they already do.

Hey I just registered to correct this thread. Very old thread I know, but it came up in my searches many times, misleading me to order the wrong part number, and I don't want it to happen to anyone else. Nice forum anyway, so I might just stay in touch.

In short:
conrod 692419 has crank pin 1.50", piston pin 0.80"
conrod 494504 has crank pin 1.25", piston pin 0.80"

These 2 links confirm the crank pin diameters:

https://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/shop/html/pages/products/Briggs_Stratton_Connecting_Rods3309.html

Before you order the part,  measure the crank pin diameter, because it might not be what the Briggs Stratton online part finder and your engine's code date tells you it should be. I found out the hard way that your engine might not conform.

Long version: So I have a series 28 OHV (model 287707 1272-E1 code 990913ZE). I know the engine is all original and never been repaired.
The Briggs & Stratton online part finder tells you that after Code Date 98063000 use conrod 692419 so that's what I ordered. I knew my crank and piston pin diameters were 1.25" and 0.80" and didn't think of checking that part # 692419 was the same.  I assumed, influenced by threads like this one, that 692419 was just an updated stronger version of 494504. It turned out it is not, and I wasted time and money exchanging the wrongly ordered part. And don't be discouraged by the parts finder telling you that conrod 494504 is only for L head models, it is also for OHV models if you happen to have the 1.25" crank pin.

Thanks for your update!! I also was confused for what connecting rod I will need to rebuild two 28 flatheads. Do you know what piston to use with those rods? 696397?

Sorry I didn't realize this was in the OHV section, but these will interchange between flathead and OHV correct?

Flatheads had 1.25 cranks. Remember these rods are not reliable over 3650rpm and WILL put a hole in the block!

Sorry for late reply. I didn't have topic notification turned on.
Yep, the conrod has  "L-head" cast into it, and its been working just fine for many hours in my OHV engine.
Don't know about the piston, easy to look up though.
