I am new to the forum and new to wanting to build a racer. I had just retired from the Navy. I was a welder/ Shipfitter in there and can build just about anything when it comes to metal. I have gotten 4 free lawn mowers so far from the local area need advice on which one would be a good race mower to build. I will post pics tomorrow when all the rain stops around here.  I have a Montgomerey Ward around 1990 that has a 12.5 b&s 7 speed thansaxle, A toro rear engine 11hp B&S , a Murray 14.5 B&S hydrostatic drive and am picking up an Older Murray 11hp tomorrow. I thought the Montgomerey ward would be a good one but have read that 7 speeds arent any good for racing. But stock its the fastes one I have.

Well being a welder/fitter in the service you should have plenty of fabrication skills. Thats what it will take to build a good race mower. The MTD/Montgomery Ward is in my opinion the best option of the mowers you have mentioned. For ideas on mtd build's check out my site at http://www.geocities.com/georgenfive/georgen5.html or http://www.geocities.com/herrinmowersports both are mtd's and both built on same principal drive train

Thanks I think I will go with the Montgomerey Ward. The links you gave me are not comming up with anything. I will be getting another rider today and post pics of it one here. Lately I have been pretty lucky with finding them for free. So far they all run very well, they just have flat tires and dead batteries.

try them now not sure what was wrong with them. They free sites so sometimes if they are heavily visited they will go down for a bit. Trying to encourage me to buy an upgrade.

Yep got them to work thanks. I will be hopefully racing with SEMOW Racers in the area here. I think its the only one local. It looks like a blast!!! Cant wait to dig into this mower and getting it ready. Still waiting for the rules of setting up for the local races.  I just wish I still had Tig capabilities like I did in the Navy. All I have now is a 220 stick welder but that will do I guess.
