15 or 16 inch tires on the front?
« on: January 15, 2010, 10:20:12 am »
I currently run 16 inch turf savers on the front of my mower and I wonder if there is any benefit to this.  I have found aluminum wheels that are 8x6 and I plan to purchase them soon.  The reason I ask is because I plan to start a new build soon and I think I want to keep the larger front tires.  I know this is kind of against the grain but that is how I do things.

WHY!!! The bigger tires makes it much easier to climb over someone if contatc is made and they are less responsive, and makes it harder to steer. I realize you want to be different but I do not see the benefit of this. unless your 4 wheeling.

I was thinking/wondering if a slower rotating, taller tire might have more traction.  I have never seen nascar run different sizes, I have seen sprints though.  I just figure why be normal plus I like to steer it, I have rode 4wd atv's for a long time with large mud tires, plus none of my farm trucks have power steering so forcing a machine to turn is almost second nature now.  We are in the process of building a Mod-X with 13's up front so I will be riding it soon to feel what it is like.

I would stay away from the bigger front tires. I used to run them and they do climb almost anything real easy. I switched to 13 650 6,s and it is way safer. The bigger tires tend to bounce quite a bit too.

Our class outlawed the large front tire for just the reason George mentioned. The large front tires do make it easier to climb the back of other mowers.

Also there will be no more 8" front wheels, this is also to prevent tire climbing and will compliment the rear bumper rule change.

Thats what it says ;)

Good point. There is a glitch in the wording of the rule witch isn't in final print yet. It should pay attention to tire size, not rim size. It's purpose is to outlaw 15 or 16 inch front tires.
