31ci avs
« on: January 04, 2010, 09:44:17 pm »
I got a 31 avs motor and was thinking instead of buying the brass weights would getting the crank balnaced allow me to get rid of the AVS and not have to run the brass weights? This will have a stock cam in it also so im thinking of using the flathead timing gear as I have read that they are weak, preferably which model flatheads timing gear will interchange?

The gears are weak because the journal is larger so the gear is thinner Flathead gear wont fit because journal is smaller...

The brass weights are what you use to balance the crank so you don't need the AVSyncro, unless you send it to Don at G-Team to have him balance it.

I might have a local engine race engine builder(like dirt racing sprints, lates ex.) to balance if he can, if not im not gonna use it, But i thought i read somewhere that you can you the timing gear off a flathead(the gear on crank) but maybe im wrong. Ill try to look for the post

It won't be cheap to balance that crank so you will have just a chunk in it itself.

I think I have a 31 AVS crank that has been balanced by Don G that I can sell.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

The only timing gear that will fit an avs crank is an avs gear. The brass weights will not fit on an avs crank, even with the eccentrics turned down because the lower main journal is too large. The only way to use the arc brass weights and a non avs timing gear is to use a non avs crank and install a bushing in the main journal hole in the oil pan, or weld up the bottom of the block so a non avs pan will fit.

Don't count out a local engine builder. Some might give you a heck of a deal IF they have never done one before (some enjoy a new challenge) AND they see an opportunity to do more.

I am building an avs motor as well and before I bought a crank that was already balanced a local engine builder was going to balance it for me for $50...if he could do it, he had never balanced one of these cranks before.

The best thing and probably cheapest is to send it to Don at g team.

But you don't want "perfect balance"... you want 52 to 55% over.
