What's the most important part of a bult motor? Obviously all the parts should gel together, but what's step one, in your opinion?

Purchasing a quality billet rod which in my opinion ARC is the best there is. Ensureing the crank is true and the clearance on the rod journal is right, and most important of all is proper installation of the rod....

Step one?

Clean everything.  Even the new parts.  All parts must be spotless.  Dirt will kill an engine faster than anything.

Clearances in my opinion is the MOST important, because if the clearances arent correct
1. Your going to lose power in some way
2. It will wear out everything else faster than it should
3. And eventually something WILL fail and you will end up paying more to get it fixed.

Getting a repair manual for all of the torque and other specs is a good idea. It's always nice to have a go to guide.

In my opinion everything is important. Although I tend to focus on the bottom and top end first.

If you mean first thing for free HP then it's clean up ports, intake, heads. A little elbow grease and some abrasives will find you your best bang for the buck.

even little things like torquing the oil pan and head in proper sequence and proper torque, results in less distorting of block, cylinder and the head itself.....resulting in more power, not a significant amount, but hey, them little things add up...
