Starting With Craftsman II mower :edited:
« on: December 24, 2009, 07:34:38 pm »
My neighbor has an old craftsman II tractor that he wants to make faster. and a spare tractor of the same type is available for parts.

we have removed the mower deck and added racing stripes (lol he was desperate) but we don't know what else can be done and/or if any parts for this particular tractor are still out there.

also, if possible we would like to keep from using anything from the spare because it only needs a new transmission to get going again.

:edited:
Ok I am now willing to spend my own money to help him get his mower running faster in the safest way possible. This mower means more to him than a little money could ever mean to me.

Also, he would like to know if there is anyway possible he can separate the clutch and brake (so he can shift without a complete stop)

THANKS!!

If he wants to build a racer with it you dont shift of the fly at all.
chose a club you will race with and look at there rules and what class you want to run.
he should get a tether kill switch right away
Tear down the mower and brace the frame up from the ground up.
Either use a kart axle and a 700 or a sutable transaxle.
Lower the racer
Make or buy a front axle.
add good brakes.
and rebuild/build up the engine depending on the class you choose

I would at best make a super Stock Class mower. At 12 he is old enoguht to run this class. Its still a stock governed engine and set ratio of 8 turns of the motor to 1 turn of the rear tires for an average 20mph top speed. Look thru the build section to get build ideas, A good safe super stock with a little enginutiy can be be built for 150 to 300.00. Thats the only class a 12 year old is old enough to run in. And its plenty fast for a kid with NO experiance. Invest in a helmet neck brace and gloves and a Tethered kill switch right off the bat. No shorts and no short sleeves or tennis shoes while on the mower either. Basic safety guidlines.
