vanguard 16 hp build
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:56:18 pm »
Just started on a new project and had a couple of questions. I am going to start building a 30 cid vanguard for a modified class. What is the best bang for the buck when building this motor. I was thinking the first thing is the Arc flywheel but then what. Cam? Valvesprings? Any help would be appreciated.

i would say the rods would be an important investment.....you change the cam and valvesprings and you will find a weak spot in the rods and ruin an engine, spend the money on the rods first...then definately the cam probably the biggest bang for the buck along with good valve springs and retainers... ;)

If your not planning on camming it right off, the flywheel springs and retainers and better rockers if stamped steel, If your putting a cam in it then rods and springs retainers and better rockers if it has stamped steel rockers.

I am planning on doing the same modification with the re-cam on my 18HP Vanguard.  What type of rods would you recommend?  Also, regarding the flywheel, would an offset key give me the same required timing adjustment a new adjustable fly wheel would?  Thanks.

Assuming you have a good 2 into 1 header and late model rockers, once you replace the valve springs and retainers, get yourself a billet flywheel just to be safe, then go after some power...............the heads would be a good place to start.
The next step would be the rods cam and carburetor all at once. ;)

Hi, first post here.....Lots of stuff to sort through on this forum, should keep me amused for days! ;)

I too have a 16hp Vanguard and would like to know reputable places to begin looking for mod parts. Like to find some exhaust, carb, filters, rods, cam, valve springs and rockers, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
