Scattershields?
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:04:14 am »
So there is a rumor going around our clubs that there will be a USLMRA rule on mandatory scattershield needed on all ungoverned engines that turn over 4000 rpms for next year. Has anyone else heard this? I did not see this in the new 2010 rules. Just trying to get a head start on if I need to build or buy one. Thanks, Glenn

It is just in the discussion stage, no more than that for 2011, along with mandatory billet aluminum in the Prepared and F/X. It is still just highly recommended now.

If they are talking about the same scatter-shield they've been using, those shields are not effective and cannot be relied on to protect anyone. The shield needs to be redesigned to encapsulate the flywheel in 1/4" steel like the shields used in drag race-cars, unfortunately that would require engineering and testing which would be unneeded if billet flywheels are made mandatory.

in my opinion, billet wheels should be mandatory in any un-governed class....if ARC sells enough of them i could see the price dropping a bit on them.....if not, they still a good bang for the buck...just my opinion tho!

I can see using the stock wheel in a STOCK class even ungoverned. I have yet in 12 years seen one explode under those conditions, Its when you add a cam and start turning them upwards of 6000 or more and they lighten them that it happens. BUT if used in a stock class even ungoverned, rules have to be enforced. Even to the point if your caught doing something which would jeapordize safety atuomatic ban.

I think modified stock flywheels should be baned! if its not a safety rated BILLET or stock it should not be alowed on ANYTHING!

the local 3 clubs i race with....modified stock wheels are banned! believe that is becoming the norm......but it's kinda hard to enforce without removing flywheel, but tech guys are trying.....so that helps!

Is there any video of a flywheel shattering. I just can't imagine it. Is it a common thing.

That guy was racing at a track near me. That's why we have banned any mods to the stock flywheel.

So a stock flywheel won't shatter as long as it's not moded right? And another ?, What is there to mod on a flywheel.

We are not going to let anyone teach anyone how to modify a stock flywheel.
A stock flywheel is just that, and meant to stay unmodified, and thusly
remain stock.

Removing the magnet from the inside of the flywheel for the stator is considered modifying a flywheel as well.
