craftsman plow tractor
« on: November 01, 2009, 07:34:46 pm »
I have been building this crafsman 20hp kohler for years now and just finally got around to making all the brackets and plow attachments along with dual side pipes, homemade 60'' plow and lift, bumper, lights, lift and pulley swap. But I have a question that i have yet to figure out and nobody knows what I am talking about. I am using the stock 6 speed transaxle with high and low range with a 5'' pulley on the transaxle. But I recently took it off because the pulley hole and keyway is not tapered like the stock 9'' and constantly walks off the shaft. I want to keep the 5'' to get around a little faster, since the 9'' is stupidly slow. Is there any place to buy a tapered bore pulley or am i out of luck? I will put more pics up tomorrow since it too dark to take any now. thanks :D

I think you will be out of luck on finding a tapered pulley.

Do you mean weld it straight to the shaft? The shaft is steel and the pulley is aluminum i believe. Was considering cutting the bore out and rewelding it into the other pulley but all I have access to is a stick welder.

and this probably isnt the right subforum to put this in, move it if you would like, I wasnt sure where to post this.

try going to a farm implement dealer like john deere and they will probably have one.

I work for a JD dealership and only a few of the older mowers have tapered shafts that are held on by a lock nut. Most of their pulleys are splined or got a keyway cut in it. Tractor Supply may have something.

Most combine pulleys are 8 to 12 inches in diameter with a much bigger shaft size.

Hm, well i got the 5''er at tractor supply, but the set screw in it started chewing up the shaft and without it always walks off of it. And the shaft goes from about 3/8 to 5/8, and I am assuming a combine pulley has a 1'' or larger shaft. I was considering cutting the bore out and bolting it in, but I dont want to ruin this one incase I need the super low gearing. Really wish this thing just had a regular shaft, ive been searching for one of these taperd pulleys forever.

Also I was wondering about the limited slip and brakes, is there anyway to conver this to a true 2 wheel drive? And I am putting a dual piston hydraulic brake setup on it, but the little disc is so tiny the caliper wont fit,  Would a disc on the axle work with the limited slip setup or just stop one side?

it would just stop 1 side. you can weld the spider gears together for solid axle

i had the same issue trying to find a pulley for my Gt6000 rear.  My local machinist said he could make a hub so you could weld the TSC pulleys on.  prolly not cheap.  I haven't done it yet but probably will soon.

Have you tried a tie-rod reamer for a car? they are tapered, but I don't know how much nor the diameter. Probably could take your pulley to an alignment shop or garage and have them ream it out for you, maybe even for free????
You should measure the diameters you would want/need and check with a shop first; The reamer might also be available @ an auto parts store for a reasonable fee (??)

cut the head off a bolt and weld it to the end of the shaft then tighten a nut down on it with some washers. it should stay on

If you know the taper of the shaft, I can get you a reamer.
