Feedback question for the "Heymow Hints" page:

What's the last thing you check before taking the track and why?

wheel hubs, locking collars, steering rod end bolts, everything gets a good once over between heat and feature races, make sure the tranny seal is still working, lol, a quick air pressure check, chain tension, pretty much all the mechanical components get a good once over, cause if it can break, it will break on the final lap when your in the front!!!!

I gear up,First is the Helmet, Then the neck brace then , my gloves. While sitting on the mower watching the last few laps I check the Digatron to make sure all the temps and readings are where they need to be, then as I pull out on the track I reach up sinch the helmet strap one more time and generally hit the top of the helmet making sure it on and tight roll the head to seat it with the neck brace, and weave back and forth on the pace lap to get a feel for the grip on the dirt then GAME ON.

One of the first things I do before leaving the pits to go on the track is to check my brakes. I make a few hard hits to make sure the pedal feel is good and the wheels will lock.

No whoa, no go.

Great responses. After reading them over I realized that I add one little step to all that checking of bolts and brakes and safety gear. I check my attitude. Am I angry, scared, nervous, happy, calm and collected? I know that my lap times will suffer if my attitude isn't right. Mental distrations can lead to accidents just as easily as a mechanical failure.

Front end, belts, safety gear, what gear am I in, tire pressure, fuel, breaks. Not in that order but basically the safety stuff, anything that you don't want to come off at top speed are my main concerns just before I race, safety, safety, safety not just for me but everyone around me.

I check to make sure all my wheel bolts are tight and safety gear. Once on the track I make sure that my brakes are working properly.

Mostly I do all the same stuff, but I also like to take a look at the other riders mowers as we head onto the track and see if I notice any loose parts or something else that could hurt someone or damage there mower or someone else's. Also during parade lap I am looking at the track for any lost parts or other obsticles.

I should have also mentioned that I think ever driver should walk the track, look at the corner entry and think about their braking zone. The more you get to know the track the more you can think about your set up.

If it's a clay track I will look down and look for large loose items and kick or through them off the track. No one want a stone in the face even with a helmet and face mask on. Watch for the groove to start to come in.

One of the most important things George Herrin told me when he visited us in Canada was to try and practice outside the groove. You know your tractor will handle pretty good in the groove, now make see if you can make it work on other places in the corner.

Usually I will make many runs in the cushion to test the grip level and work on making the tractor a little free up there. Then I will make a few mock-qualifying runs in the groove to see how it works down there. Also by practicing in the cushion you can help to widen the corner to make it a two groove track.

I also keep a log book of set-ups for various conditions with wedge and air pressure setting for various track surfaces. I also log temperature and humidity and any carb changes that I have made so that I can go to a know base set-up if the changes I make don't work properly.

Next year I will carry 4 scales so that I can more accurately log my cross wedge percentages and front and rear biases while I'm at the track and easily go back to my baseline settings.

Think I found a future feature story ... Growing up, I heard Wade Boggs ate fried chicken before every baseball game ... a few thousand hits later ...

Superstitions!

Carry on everyone! This is good stuff!
