Rebuilding a 1977 Sear LT/10
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:02:56 am »
I am restoring a 1977 Sears LT/10 as a project.  I used to drive one of these around as a main mode of transportation when in my early teens it served also as a lawn cutting device but we used it more to drive around to get places.  We would fill up a 5 gallon gas can and throw in the trailer then cruise for miles down back roads.   I picked one up last spring after finding it on Craigslist to rebuild it.  These are the before pictures when I purchased it.

Pictures coming soon spent a few months sanding, sandblasting and repainting the old tractor.   I have everything repainted now and will show some disassembled pictures with the new paint job then as I reassemble the project.

I originally was going to turn it into a racer when I first bought it than I found out there are not many club members in Colorado or places to race it close by.   There is a group out in Ault CO that races but they mostly have heavy modifieds.  Other close places would be in Kansas which would be fun they have great tracks out there.

Now it is just a restoration project that I will use around our little farm to haul stuff.   I have an area in the backyard which I will race the kid in on stock tractors.   One day I would like to modify it to race in the next class up but that is a few years down the road.

Tagging some assembly pictures from photobucket. The original tranny was trashed so I had to buy a new one from some dude in PA.  After I pulled it apart all the axle roller bearings fell out.  The tranny came from an old Jacobson lawn tractor which was red.  I am going with a dark rich red color and black after repainting it.   The beast will be finished by next weekend and more pictures to follow.   I am going to use the original 32 year old 10 HP engine which I tore done to replace all the gaskets on.   It ran strong when I bought so it will be reinstalled.  Compression tested good and no grooves in the cylinder walls.

Going for more parts in the morning, need a new drive belt and belt guide pins before I reinstall the tranny.  Parts are on order from Sears for new Idler Pullies and Shoulder Bolt for the clutch.   new Brake pads are installed.  Purchased all new assembly nuts and bolts this week.   Project is moving along well.   Need to get it out of the garage because winter is coming quick to Colorado.  We have already had 8 inches of snow.   I need the garage back for my other toy a 1992 Miata.

A few beers in the Man Cave

I got the tranny and tires installed this evening it is now a rolling chassis and almost ready for the engine.   I have to rework the front suspension a little.  I attempted to use the spindles from a LT 1000 on the original front axle. I have way too much camber and would be riding on the outside of the tires instead of the middle.  Not a big deal I will install the LT1000 axle on the frame and with a few washers it will fit up great.  A few more parts are needed to make it fit.

Still playing with different configurations on how to retrofit a LT1000 front axle on the 1977 Tractor.   No new pictures yet.   Brain is still thinking about it.

Retro fitted the LT 1000 axle and it looks just the same way as when I installed the stock front axle.   8) It is a non issue.   Man I glad I can just use the stock axle, now I can start finishing the rest of the build.   Will have the engine installed by the end of the weekend and may just having it running again.  :D
