ch18 problems
« on: September 20, 2009, 12:07:21 pm »
Starts and runs well for about a half hour, then backfires and eventually shuts off. Will not re-start for two days, then repeats the above. It has gone through the same cycle 4 times now.

I have checked the fuel delivery and gas is coming out the main jet into the carburetor, but the spark plugs are dry. Also, I am getting no spark.

Any ideas?

Did you try replacing the plugs?

compression is good? and it is getting fuel? i had a old 2 stroke atv that was like that it ran fine untill it stalls then you couldnt kick it over for anything but you could pop the clutch and get it started. i forget what the next owner did to get it running i would have to talk to his son tomorrow. try rebuilding the carb if you get good compression.

This is a capacitive discharge (ignition module) system, no coil

At the end of the spark plug wires would be the coils,it might be the kill wire that is bare and grounding out

Thanks for the help. I located the problem at the ignition switch. I cleaned the corrosion off the connections and it started right up. Apparently, the kill switch was intermitently shorting out.
