yamaha lawn mower
« on: September 12, 2009, 01:26:53 pm »
I finally picked up a yamaha mower.  I was told the motors are Kawasakis but the cover says Yamaha which doesn't mean anything. Has anyone ever run one of these motors or know anything about what they are?
I will build it to look yamaha only and run whatever our area makes up for rules.  I just wanted the rarety of a Yamaha mower, not many made and most of them are probly still being used, they were of very high quality and only made for three years.

Not sayin it would be hard to use but most prefer MTD because of how easy they are to work with. Also motor wise its etheir briggs or tec. because there easiest to get parts for.

To heck with that, Build that Yamma Hammer!
Can we see some picks?

And Briggs or techs Only?? I guess, unless you consider 3 time national BP champ and his Kawasaki?

I never sed briggs or tec "only". BUT if you can find a way to get parts for it, go for it.

I think it's funny how things turn into brand loyalty or whatever you wanna call it. Chevy is better than Ford (I like Mopar products myself) Craftsmans ain't worth nothin', build an MTD cause they're easier..... anyway you get my point. It's all a matter of opinion. It is true that there are differences in them all, but once you make it a racer all that is really left of the original is the sheet metal. I've said it before and I'll say it again, ANY mower can be made into a racer. Any lawn mower engine can be made to run at higher than stock RPM's too. I like the one-off machines the best. The more unique or rare the better. Get some pics of your build up here, I wanna see it.

All I noticed about the motor so far is that it is a preasure lube, and that is good for more rpms than what we are running now.
I run yamaha snowmobiles. That is why I wanted one, that and they are rare.  And my friend rides for us sells at the dealer.  My other friend who owns the one we run now sells at the cat dealer accross the road.
Now we can have one from each dealer.
I wont do any building on this till late winter probly.  Sled season is comming up fast and you guys and your dang mower addiction has depleated my sled fund considerably :bash:
Still waiting on what our new and improved rules will be before I buy much for it or do anything anyway.
I have a yamaha snow blower that ran out of oil and stuck a rod.  I was impressed with this motor when I took it apart, it had ball bearings or needle bearings on everything that spun, cam, crank, counterweight.  Nothing like a briggs, that is for sure.

This mower has a very rugget C channel frame and a very sturdy steering colum all ready.

Yamaha only ran there own engines, not a kawasaki, briggs etc.... All pure yamaha.Parts for modifacation will be almost impossible to get. Your best bet would be get a vanguard or what ever to replace what was in it originally.

I would seriously look at the yamaha engine for potential to make power. If it is anything like the honda engines you could probably make good power with some valve and cam work and simple blue printing. Most Japanese engines I have seen the bottom ends are durable enough for what we are doing with them. The briggs and tec engines with exception to the vangard (mitsubishi) are made for cheap power and not durability.
