Honda GX390
« on: June 11, 2009, 01:28:15 pm »
Just getting a feel from how many people run the Honda GX390 engine and what have they done to it..

I have found tons of pieces new to really make these fly and in a lightweight chassis they might be a good runner..

The quality control on clones is a little worse, but for the most part there the same engine, and will accept just about any parts the genuine honda will.

Those clones are AWSOME!! They make great power and RPM's in bone stock form. And the engines are well made.

Clone engine will never be good like a honda, maybe with a few honda oem parts they will last a little longer

my idea is do testing with a cheap clone honda, and after build a real honda

This was my first plan , but horizontal engine was not legal in my club

While CHEAP money wise and they do ok THEY ARE NOT A HONDA nor ever will be. Just my opinion. And they are not as well made as a Honda.

Several years ago it was said that the new imports from Japan were JUNK! And many of them were, inferior metals and machine work over all quality were terrible at first. But then, them there Japanese fellers, well they figured out how to make stuff better and so today we see Honda and think "quality". Chinese items, from lead painted childrens toys to rocket ships will suffer the same fate as the early Japanese products. There may be a day when things from China have the American public seeing them as quality goods. China is still an infant in the industrial world. It will take a while for them to learn what level of quality will sell in foreign markets. Remember when the laptop batteries caused fires? They reverse engineered a battery, but didn't use quality parts. Look at all the chinese scooters laying dead, bunches of them have the GY6 clone motor in them. And while it is true that genuine OEM parts will fit in a clone, they may not fit exactly. All I'm saying in a long winded way, is be warry of the clones.

I have a 390 on mine and it runs awesome. The only thing I've done to it so far is put on a header, valve springs, titanium rod bolts, aftermarket air filter and a timing key. I have a buddy that has been running a bone stock 390 for 8 years now and turns the thing 5500 all day long and hasn't had a bit of problems with it. So in my opinion they are great motors.

With the class weight for Outlaw at 260 lbs.. and with the engine rules that let you really go wild.. I wondered why not use a small Honda engine..

It will be tough to go against the vannies but with the parts available parts and the quality of the ports in the heads, there is power to be made with these little engines.

The weight limit for outlaw is 275lbs...........its 260 for the mod class.

The Honda is a pretty impressive single cylinder engine, and if I had to run a single that's what I would run.
