12 Mile 500 in Indiana
« on: May 30, 2009, 01:00:06 am »
Has anybody here run this race before?  The qualifying is next Sunday June 7th and I am trying to get my mower back together in time and I measured the width on the rear and I am at 39.25" due to spacing contraints with the disc brake on my locked transaxle.  Their rules say 36" MAX which is a stock width on everything I have measured but it also states that the brakes must me capable of locking and holding the rear axle with driver onboard but I don't see how that is possible with a 36" width and do it SAFELY and CORRECTLY.  Any ideas?  I can trim it to fit into the 38" max for ARMA no problem but I just don't think I can get it down 3.25"!!  If anybody has raced this race before due they hold that rule pretty firm or could I get it to the 38" width for a SANCTIONED set of rules (which it is built to obviously other than the width) and get through tech?  SO frustrating.. I have worked my but off getting it back together and had it done tonight and went to measuring and was like CRAP!  It is a 3.5 hour drive for me to go up there and don't want to get turned away because of 2 inches!!  Any input?

Thanks!
Tom

I have raced this track twice and tried again this past sunday. My new mower has a width of 36" and I am running a disc brake setup. So it is possible to have good brakes and still be legal. Although I didn't get qualified for the race yet, I will be back at race day and try to take another stab at it. We finished the mower up about an hour before qualifying started, so never had a chance to get the bugs worked out of it and it showed. The first qualifying attempt I broke the rear chain, so we got it back together and tried it again. Second attempt wasnt to good either, it ended up ripping the jack shaft out of the darn thing. So back to the drawing board we go and make another attempt at it July 4th.

I got it into spec and believe I made the race.  My mph would have put me 13th last year but I guess we will see, not official yet.

Its going to be hard to get in this year I think. We had 42 mowers show up for the briggs class sunday for qualifying. So I imagine we are going to have 10 or more guys show back up for race day and try to get in. If I remember right there were only 17 or 18 for the mods. They will probably put people that didn't qualify in the mod race.

Hey Tom, Glad you could make it Sunday, I'm starting 24th and gunnin for ya. Its a long race, make sure your motor starts/dies at least 3 times for your pit stops. It is alot of fun, better than running 10 laps only turning left. I was the only guy to loose a tire :bash: Sunday and held back  a little cause my borrowed left front was rubbing bad.
You said it is a 3.5 hr drive, where you from? I would like to invite you to wabash on the 13 for our race if you can make it.          lookin forward to meeting you on the 4th.         Scott

Got all the qualifying results in the mail today. Sounds like they are going to have a 20 lap "B Main" race for the 33rd spot, and everyone else they are going to put in the modified race. So 20 laps in the b main and 60 laps in the a main, thats going to make for a long day. lol.

Thread should not have been locked, just pictures without safety equipment can't be shown, or a link to them. Sorry for the confusion.
